00:00
hey everybody my name is Coley Waataja
00:02
i’m the Director of Women’s Ministry
00:03
here at Antioch Community Church in
00:05
Northeast Minneapolis
00:07
and for today’s devotional i want to
00:09
tell you a story from the book of
00:10
nehemiah
00:12
nehemiah was a leader and a bit of a
00:15
prophet in
00:16
the city of jerusalem after the
00:18
israelites had been
00:19
enslaved and in exile in babylon for
00:22
years and years and years
00:23
a number of people were able to come
00:25
back to the city of jerusalem and they
00:27
were trying to rebuild it
00:28
and it was going okay nehemiah and
00:32
another leader ezra were kind of in
00:33
charge of rebuilding the wall
00:35
and rebuilding the temple and it was
00:38
going all right
00:39
but there were still some problems and
00:42
eventually
00:43
they realized that the people of israel
00:45
although they were back where they
00:47
belonged in terms of where they lived
00:49
they didn’t yet know god they didn’t
00:51
know god’s law
00:53
and that is what identified the people
00:55
of israel as god’s chosen people
00:58
and so they decide that the people need
00:59
to be reacquainted with the law
01:01
and so in nehemiah chapter 8 nehemiah
01:05
commissions ezra who is the priest at
01:07
the time
01:08
to read to gather all of the men and
01:10
women it says
01:12
so ezra the priest brought the law
01:14
before the assembly both men and women
01:16
and all who could understand what they
01:17
heard and he read
01:19
from from it facing the square
01:23
from early morning until midday in the
01:25
presence of the men and women
01:27
and those who could understand
01:30
and he reads the people this law
01:33
that god had graciously given them that
01:35
was their identifying marker as the
01:37
people of god
01:39
and the people praised and they wept
01:43
it’s so interesting in verse nine in
01:44
chapter eight he continues
01:47
uh nehemiah who was the governor and
01:49
ezra the priest and scribe
01:50
and the levites who taught the people
01:52
said to them this
01:54
day is holy to the lord your god do not
01:56
mourn or weep
01:58
because the people were wept as they
02:00
heard the words of the law
02:02
and then he said to them go your way eat
02:04
and drink
02:05
and send portions to anyone who has
02:06
nothing to eat
02:08
for this day is holy to our lord and do
02:11
not be grieved
02:12
for the day for the joy of the lord if
02:14
your is your strength
02:15
so the levites calmed all the people
02:17
saying be quiet
02:19
for this day is holy do not be grieved
02:21
and all the people went their way to eat
02:23
and drink and send portions
02:25
and to make great rejoicing because they
02:27
had understood
02:29
the words that were declared to them
02:33
when i first read this a couple of days
02:35
ago i was reflecting on it and i thought
02:36
why are the people weeping
02:38
well the law god’s word
02:42
does several things for us and one of
02:44
the big things it does is it reveals our
02:46
sin
02:47
and so for these people who had not
02:49
heard the law yet in their lifetime
02:51
who had not heard god’s word read aloud
02:54
they hear it and they weep because they
02:56
realize how
02:57
far off they’ve gotten just how far from
03:00
god they really
03:01
are and so they were mourning that
03:05
but ezra and nehemiah and the other
03:07
leaders encourage them
03:08
to not be grieved because
03:12
god’s word doesn’t just show us our sin
03:15
god’s word also shows us how we can be
03:17
made right to him
03:19
how we can be in a right relationship
03:21
with him
03:22
and that’s through the person of jesus
03:24
christ we know that now and
03:26
it’s it was true then but we know it now
03:28
because he has come
03:30
and he lived a life and he died on the
03:31
cross and he rose from the dead
03:33
defeating
03:34
sin and death and the devil and
03:37
because of god’s word we know this and
03:40
because
03:41
of history and and archaeology and
03:43
things like in science we can actually
03:44
prove it jesus was
03:46
a real living person he really did die
03:49
on a cross and he
03:50
really did rise from the dead
03:53
and god is not just an infinite god
03:57
who’s out there somewhere
03:58
and who’s angry but he is a god
04:02
who recognizes that the only way that we
04:05
can be made right with him
04:07
is if he acts first and so he did
04:11
he is not just an angry god he is a god
04:13
of mercy
04:14
and compassion second corinthians
04:17
the author paul praises god he said
04:19
blessed be the god and father of our
04:21
lord jesus christ
04:22
the father of mercies and the god of all
04:25
comfort
04:26
who comforts us in all our afflictions
04:28
so that we may be able to comfort
04:31
those who are in any affliction
04:32
themselves with the comfort with which
04:34
we ourselves are comforted by god
04:37
so the god’s word does reveal our sin
04:41
but it also reveals how we can be made
04:43
right with him
04:45
and that is why the leaders were able to
04:47
say don’t just mourn don’t be sad
04:50
it’s a good thing that you know the law
04:51
it’s a good thing that you’ve heard
04:53
god’s word today
04:54
even though it’s revealed your sin this
04:56
is a day of rejoicing
04:59
because you are you are in relationship
05:01
with him
05:03
so i would encourage you to think about
05:04
that today are you in relationship with
05:07
the god of the universe
05:09
he’s not a god who’s far off he loves
05:11
you and he’s drawn near and he has made
05:13
himself
05:13
known and you can know him too through
05:16
his word
05:17
i would encourage you to spend some time
05:19
in his word today if you’ve never picked
05:21
up a bible before
05:23
an easy place to start might be the book
05:24
of john the gospel of john
05:27
john walked with jesus and then he wrote
05:30
down
05:31
his experience with jesus and that’s the
05:33
book of john
05:34
and as you if you open it and you
05:38
in all genuineness say lord if you are
05:42
real would you show yourself to me
05:44
he will show himself to you i pray that
05:46
that happens for you today
05:47
god bless
