Gospel Identity & Motivation: 1 Peter 1:22–23

May 13, 2020 | by Matt Kinnick

Where should the Christian gain their sense of identity from? How should the Christian understand their identity as followers of Jesus? How does identity relate to motivation in the Christian life? Watch as Pastor Matt unpacks the first of three passages in the book of 1 Peter to help us understand the gospel as it relates to identity and motivation in the Christian life.

last week I shared a little bit of video
00:03
talking about identity and helping us
00:06
understand what is it and particularly
00:07
for the Christian how should we
00:09
understand identity I just said that
00:11
identity something the whole human
00:12
population is grappling with we all need
00:15
to understand a sense of who we are
00:17
since himself and I talked about how
00:19
identity is primarily one of one of the
00:21
ways that we secure our sense of value
00:23
and significance so obviously it’s very
00:26
important and particularly for the
00:28
Christian we understand our identity in
00:30
a unique way and it’s not primarily
00:32
linked to who what we do in particular
00:36
is the uniqueness of the Christian
00:38
identity but then it’s because of who
00:39
God is and what he’s done that we
00:41
understand our identity so if it’s
00:44
helpful to think linearly I find it
00:46
helpful like a flow chart is that
00:47
because of who God is
00:49
that’s theology and we find that mostly
00:51
primarily in the Bible because of who
00:53
God is that’s theology and because of
00:55
what God has done in the gospel
00:57
primarily but all throughout history the
01:00
redemptive history of the Bible the
01:02
gospel being that Jesus Jesus Christ’s
01:05
life death and resurrection to forgive
01:07
the sins of of people and to give us
01:10
eternal life because of who God is
01:12
that’s theology because of what he’s
01:14
done in the gospel those two things tell
01:16
us who we are
01:17
and because we understand who we are as
01:20
Christians then we’re able to understand
01:22
how we should live and what we should do
01:24
so because the fuggin is God is what has
01:27
he done in the gospel and then we
01:30
understand who we are because of those
01:32
two things and then we understand how we
01:34
should live because of understanding who
01:36
we are related to who God is and what
01:39
he’s done so I find that to be helpful
01:41
to think about kind of the Christian
01:43
context for understanding identity and
01:45
how we should live our lives so I want
01:48
to look at three examples of identity in
01:52
first Peter and we’ll do three videos
01:54
but the first one we’ll look at today to
01:57
understand what the gospel identity is
02:00
because of who what Jesus has done we
02:02
understand who we are I want to look at
02:04
some examples of that but also the idea
02:06
that the writers of the New Testament
02:08
while the whole Bible but especially the
02:10
New Testament like in the letters of
02:12
Paul or theirs
02:14
they talk about because of who we are
02:17
this is how we should live or they say
02:20
we should live this way because of who
02:23
we are in the gospel and because of the
02:24
gospel itself so I call that identity
02:27
driven obedience or gospel driven
02:29
obedience because of the work of Jesus
02:31
and because of who we are in the gospel
02:33
the work of Jesus we understand how we
02:36
should live and it actually is a
02:37
motivating power to want to a desire a
02:41
desire creating effect to make us want
02:44
to live in such a way rather than we get
02:46
in trouble when we get it backwards we
02:48
want to live in such a way because we
02:50
should or because I want to find my
02:52
identity through doing such a thing or
02:54
or living in such a way and I talked
02:56
about that last week so we want to
02:58
understand that progression of the Bible
03:00
gives us so three examples from first
03:02
Peter briefly just the understanding of
03:04
the context of first Peter is that the
03:06
Apostle Peter is writing to Christians
03:08
that are dispersed all throughout Turkey
03:11
or modern-day Turkey or Italy or Greece
03:14
they’re experiencing suffering and
03:16
they’re trying to follow Christ
03:17
faithfully and he writes to encourage
03:19
them the first part he writes to help
03:21
them understand the truth of the gospel
03:23
be reminded about it talk about the
03:25
challenge of suffering and then also how
03:28
we should live then in the next part of
03:30
the first chapter and that’s we’re gonna
03:31
look at verses 22 and 23 of 1st Peter
03:34
chapter 1 and I’ll read those verses it
03:37
says having purified your souls by your
03:40
obedience to the truth for a sincere
03:41
brotherly love love one another
03:44
earnestly from a pure heart since you’ve
03:47
been born again not of perishable seed
03:49
but of imperishable through the living
03:51
and abiding Word of God so it’s just
03:54
three parts I want to look at first of
03:56
all is what is the command that he’s
03:57
giving God’s people to live out and that
04:00
is from verse 22 to love one another
04:02
earnestly from a pure heart so that’s
04:04
the command he’s saying this is what I
04:06
want you to do this is what you need to
04:07
do but because as we said before he
04:11
gives them motivation as to why should
04:13
we want to and desire to do this well he
04:16
says in verse 23 cents or because you
04:19
should love one other earnestly because
04:21
you’ve been born again not of perishable
04:24
seat but of imperishable so there’s your
04:27
motive
04:27
why we’ve been born again and then the
04:30
last I want to look at his is how did
04:32
that happen how did this being born
04:34
again well he says it’s through the
04:36
living and abiding word of God and if we
04:38
look over at verse 25 he clarifies that
04:41
living an abiding Word of God is the
04:43
good news that was preached to you
04:45
he’s saying it’s the gospel the work of
04:47
Jesus on the cross to forgive sins and
04:49
to give you eternal life so so what’s
04:54
the connection between that command to
04:55
love one another earnestly with it from
04:57
a pure heart and why because we’ve been
05:00
born again well there’s a couple things
05:02
I want to look at first of all is that
05:04
it says because you’ve been born again
05:07
you should love one another is saying
05:09
that we used to be dead we did we were
05:13
ruled by sin previously and so we needed
05:15
to be born again through a spiritual
05:17
rebirth by the Spirit of God through the
05:19
gospel of God we were unable to love
05:22
earnestly and from a pure heart before
05:24
because of our old life ruled by sin and
05:27
in the Bible say all people are
05:29
afflicted by sin there’s no way to fix
05:32
it apart from coming to Christ and
05:34
trusting and believing in Jesus and
05:36
having that new birth happen through the
05:38
Spirit of God so we’re actually able to
05:40
love because we’re being born again
05:42
first of all and the second is that it
05:45
says from a pure heart love earnestly in
05:47
one another from a pure heart our hearts
05:50
weren’t pure because of sin
05:51
previously before knowing Christ and
05:54
being born again but now we’ve been
05:55
given a pure heart through the
05:57
forgiveness and righteousness of Jesus
05:59
so we’re able to love earnestly from a
06:02
pure heart because of the gospel because
06:04
we have a new identity so he’s saying
06:07
that truth that reality whether you
06:09
recognize it or not it’s a reality for
06:11
the Christian should motivate you to
06:13
want to and be able to earnestly love
06:17
one another and then I also want to
06:19
point out that the gospel itself it’s
06:21
not explicitly mentioned here but the
06:22
gospel itself is a powerful motivator to
06:25
love because in the gospel we see the
06:28
love of God most supremely demonstrated
06:30
as we see in John the Gospel of John
06:33
verse 3 chapter 3 verse 16 it says for
06:36
God so loved the world he gave His only
06:38
Son so that whoever believes in Him
06:41
should
06:41
perish but have eternal life he gave his
06:43
own son over to death for the
06:45
forgiveness of our sins and then we
06:47
could ever eternal life in life in him
06:50
and so that is the love of God on
06:52
display in the most extreme in
06:54
incredible way and that itself should
06:57
make us want to love one another
06:59
earnestly from a pure heart so that’s
07:02
the gospel motivation for the command is
07:04
that you’ve been born again and it’s
07:07
also that that sense of motivation of
07:09
from our identity that we are no longer
07:11
who we used to be we’re born again to
07:13
having pure hearts and we should love
07:16
because God loves us so that’s a gospel
07:19
identity and an identity driven
07:21
obedience example that I wanted to share
07:23
the first of three from first Peter so
07:26
thanks so much look forward to the next
07:28
two weeks and we’ll share the other two
07:30
thanks
