hey Antioch Matt Kinnick here sharing
00:04
another daily devotional I’m the
00:05
associate pastor here at Antioch
00:07
Community Church and wanted to take a
00:09
look at Colossians chapter 3 in the New
00:11
Testament it’s from the Apostle Paul he
00:13
was writing to the church in modern-day
00:15
Turkey in the city of Colossae and to
00:18
the believers there and in chapter 3
00:19
he’s unpacking some implications of the
00:22
gospel about you know who we no longer
00:24
are and who we are now because of our
00:27
belief in Jesus and are his death is our
00:29
death and his life is our life and then
00:32
in verses 12 to 17 of Colossians chapter
00:35
3 he’s talking about so how does this
00:37
work out in our life as the family of
00:40
God as God’s people as the church and
00:43
there’s various things he talks about
00:45
but I wanted to pay particular attention
00:47
to verse 15 Colossians chapter 3 verse
00:50
15 and I’ll read it here it says and let
00:53
the Peace of Christ rule in your hearts
00:55
to which indeed you were called in one
00:58
body and be thankful there’s a couple
01:02
things I wanted to take a look at in
01:03
here but first of all it’s interesting
01:05
when I was in The Navigators I was being
01:08
trained to how to study the Bible and I
01:10
learn about the scripture and it was
01:12
really helpful and one of the things
01:14
that they taught me was to say the
01:17
phrase of the verse but emphasize
01:20
different words one at a time as you
01:22
read it so for instance you would say
01:24
let the Peace of Christ rule in your
01:27
hearts verses you could say let the
01:30
Peace of Christ rule in your hearts and
01:33
just do that all the way through the
01:34
sentence which each of each of the words
01:36
and emphasize them one at a time and it
01:39
helps you meditate on the truth and gain
01:42
more insights into it as you go and I
01:44
found it really helpful so thinking
01:45
about what does it look like to let the
01:48
Peace of Christ rule in our hearts
01:51
emphasizing that maybe there’s things
01:53
that we can do that sort of impede the
01:56
Peace of Christ to be experienced in our
01:59
lives what are the things we’re doing or
02:00
roadblocks or obstacles that we’re
02:02
putting in the way not enabling us to
02:06
experience the Peace of Christ for you
02:09
perhaps in this challenging pandemic
02:10
like me giving in to anxious worry of
02:13
all of the what-ifs is an easy way to
02:16
not allow the Peace of Christ to rule in
02:19
my heart what does it look like for the
02:20
Peace of Christ to rule in my heart
02:23
that’s another great question
02:24
terrain to have sovereignty over to have
02:27
dominion and control does the Peace of
02:30
Christ have control over my mind and my
02:32
heart in this China in this time in this
02:35
pandemic maybe not I think there’s
02:37
definite times when it hasn’t been
02:39
ruling in my heart because I’ve been
02:40
giving in to anxieties and fears of like
02:42
oh we’ve got to do all these things
02:43
we’ve got a panic and and try to manage
02:46
and jump into all these new ideas and
02:48
change our whole schedule and all these
02:50
different things or certainly fears
02:52
around the economic impacts of this
02:54
pandemic globally locally the the
02:57
markets are going wild and crazy and the
03:00
uncertainty of you know retirement or
03:03
investments for some people or even just
03:05
their own jobs being on furlough or
03:07
losing work or not having income it can
03:11
be easy to give in to these what ifs in
03:13
these fears and make that a roadblock to
03:15
not experience the peace of Christ so
03:18
and having it rule in our lives to have
03:20
control and reign over our thinking
03:22
primarily rather than what do I need to
03:25
do what do I need to do to fix my
03:27
situation verses Lord I can trust you to
03:31
take care of me now I’ll just do what I
03:33
can in the present and trust you for
03:35
what I don’t have control over so let
03:38
the Peace of Christ rule in your hearts
03:41
to which indeed you were called in one
03:43
body and be thankful so I think that’s
03:47
those are some examples of what it could
03:48
look like but how do we really engage
03:50
with the peace of Christ so that it can
03:52
rule and reign in our hearts well
03:55
there’s two things I think that we see
03:57
first is from a couple verses Isaiah
04:00
26:3 says you will keep in perfect peace
04:04
him whose mind is steadfast because he
04:08
trusts in you
04:08
so God God is saying if we trust in him
04:13
we will experience his peace and
04:15
steadfastness of mind because we’re
04:18
trusting in him and then Romans 15:13
04:21
I’ll read that here quick I should have
04:25
pulled that up
04:26
sooner it’s a it’s a beautiful short
04:31
little verse Romans 15:13 says may the
04:34
god of Hope fill you with all joy and
04:37
peace in believing so that by the power
04:41
of the Holy Spirit you may abound in
04:43
hope may the god of Hope fill you with
04:46
all joy and peace in believing so that
04:49
by the power of the Holy Spirit you may
04:51
abound in hope so again it’s in
04:54
believing that we experience the joy and
04:56
peace of God so how do we engage with
04:59
experiencing the peace of Christ ruling
05:01
our hearts we have to trust God and
05:04
believe in him that’s one of the ways
05:07
that we engage the peace of Christ in
05:09
our minds and hearts is by trusting that
05:11
he is good and he is sovereign he is our
05:14
God and he’s in control ultimately and
05:16
not us and the second is from
05:19
Philippians 4:6 and 7 it says do not be
05:21
anxious about anything but in everything
05:23
by prayer and petition or just asking
05:26
God present your requests to God and the
05:29
peace of God which transcends all
05:31
understanding will guard your hearts and
05:32
minds in Christ Jesus
05:33
so praying and being thankful help us to
05:38
experience the peace of God especially
05:40
in the midst of anxiousness and anxiety
05:42
and fears and doubts of all the what-ifs
05:44
so Philippians 4:6 and 7 being prayerful
05:47
in the midst of anxiety and thankful for
05:49
what we do see God doing helps us to
05:52
experience and appropriate the peace of
05:54
Christ in our minds and hearts and then
05:57
finally we see that here in verse 15 as
05:58
well it says indeed to which indeed you
06:01
were called in one body and be thankful
06:04
being thankful to what God has done in
06:06
His goodness that we can see helps us to
06:09
experience his peace so let’s let let
06:12
let’s allow the peace of Christ to rule
06:15
and have control in our minds and hearts
06:17
by trusting and believing him and by
06:20
taking our anxieties to him in prayer
06:22
and by being thankful with for what we
06:25
do see God caring for us and how he’s at
06:28
work that’s my encouragement for you
06:30
today let’s trust him today and
06:32
experience his peace together we love
06:34
you we’ll see you later Antioch
