00:00
hello Antioch family and Facebook
00:01
friends Darrius here one of the pastures
00:03
and Antioch Community Church Northeast
00:05
Minneapolis here to share a word of
00:07
encouragement with you today I mean I
00:09
wanted to start off by saying my
00:10
thoughts and my prayers I would everyone
00:11
during this troubling time of injustice
00:14
and riots I want to talk about a story
00:18
from the book of second Samuel Chapter
00:20
12 and second Samuel Chapter 12 we find
00:24
a person named David now what’s
00:27
interesting about David David was a
00:29
shepherd but the Bible tells us that
00:30
David had a good heart he was a man
00:33
after God’s own heart so God had
00:35
actually put David in a position of
00:37
power and authority he made him the king
00:39
of Israel now David in Chapter 12 makes
00:44
a very foolish choice David uses this
00:47
power and authority to rob a man named
00:51
Uriah who was ethnically different from
00:54
the people of Israel he was a Hittite
00:56
the Bible tells us he robbed him of
00:58
something precious and he even wrapped
01:00
him up his very life now displeased and
01:03
disappointed in the in this choice that
01:07
David made God sends the prophet Nathan
01:10
to confront David of his crime and his
01:13
sin
01:14
Nathan stands before David the King and
01:18
he tells him a story of how a rich man
01:21
robbed a poor man of something precious
01:24
his precious lamb the only thing that he
01:27
had that was very precious to him that
01:28
he raised her like his own child it was
01:30
his very life and out of anger of what
01:33
this purse this choice that this person
01:35
made David says he needs to be put to
01:38
death
01:39
and Nathan stands before this king which
01:41
is was very brave of him because it
01:43
could have cost him his very life and
01:44
says David you are actually the person
01:47
who I’m referring to in this story
01:50
confronted with his sin David confesses
01:53
his sin and he has to face the physical
01:56
consequences of his sin which one was
01:59
being he end up losing something very
02:01
precious to him his son ended up passing
02:04
away and God also punishes David by he
02:11
has to he
02:13
he had to face the visit by him facing
02:14
those physical consequences and but God
02:18
also gives David grace and because David
02:22
repented and he promised to change his
02:25
ways God gives him grace as well now I
02:29
want to look at a couple of things we
02:30
see and learn from this story one of the
02:33
first things we see in this story we see
02:36
that sin is exposed there is no secret
02:40
sin when it comes to God we out of guilt
02:44
shame and out of worry we we tend to
02:49
hide our sins and our wrongdoings from
02:52
other people and sometimes even try to
02:55
trick it from ourselves but there is no
02:58
sin that God does not sees everything is
03:02
exposed to him we cannot hide it from
03:04
him
03:04
another thing that we see in this story
03:07
is we see the tragic consequences of sin
03:10
in this story sin gives occasion to
03:14
three different things firstly sin gives
03:17
the occasion for people to blaspheme God
03:20
because David was a man after God’s
03:23
heart he was a heart he was a believer
03:25
of God because of this choice it gave
03:30
opportunity for people to say blaspheme
03:33
God’s name in the story David sin also
03:37
gave occasion to public humiliation to
03:41
people that was not involved in his sin
03:43
if you keep reading on this story you’ll
03:46
learn about the humiliation that his
03:49
wives and his family had to face because
03:51
of this poor choice that David made and
03:54
the third thing that this choice in this
03:58
sin that David made gave occasion to it
04:00
gave occasion to violence in the story
04:03
if we keep reading on to chapter 13 we
04:07
see that one of the punishments for
04:10
Davis choice was violence was never
04:12
going to leave his house
04:13
David had continued fighting Wars
04:18
fighting family members through through
04:21
violence and so that
04:22
one of the consequences as a face threw
04:24
violently taking this man’s life a third
04:28
thing that we see in this story is we
04:31
see what we can what we should do and
04:35
what we can do with sin we see that the
04:37
only thing that we can do with sin is to
04:39
confess it if you read the story if you
04:44
read the book of Psalms chapter xxxii
04:47
David recounts this time in his life and
04:50
he talks about how as he tried to mask
04:54
his sin as he tried to cover up his
04:57
saying it only got him deeper into a
05:00
hole his conscience ate away at him so
05:04
it just sin it tends to eat away at us
05:07
and it tends to just drive us into a
05:09
deeper hole it’s only only thing that’s
05:12
right for us to do is to confess that
05:14
sin before God and to confess it before
05:16
men and fourthly we see in this story is
05:21
we see God’s response in this story we
05:26
see a response from God in this story we
05:28
see God responds in judgment to David’s
05:32
sin because after David and David also
05:38
responds in judgment once you heard
05:40
about this story he said the person
05:42
needed to be put to death
05:43
he condemned himself and also God
05:47
condemned David for his actions and his
05:50
and the choice that he made but also we
05:52
see God respond in grace where he tell
05:54
David that that dissing will not cost
05:57
you your life sin though forgiven leaves
06:01
a mark there is a certain mark that sin
06:05
leaves upon the lives of those who
06:07
commit it it leaves and even in the
06:11
lives of those around the people that
06:13
committed it remains as a disgrace and a
06:16
scar on our conscience when we commit
06:18
sins God is just and he will forgive
06:22
those sins but they still affect our
06:24
lives but we know that God is always
06:28
saying I seek justice his response to
06:31
sin and unrighteousness is I
06:34
and I seek justice so what are some ways
06:36
that we can apply this story to our
06:40
lives there in three ways I think that
06:42
we can apply this story of David
06:44
committing this sin and God’s response
06:46
to this sin in our lives the first way
06:48
is to confess sin confession of sin is a
06:52
sure first step into freedom from sin
06:57
only when we have take ownership of our
07:01
sins and our wrongdoings and we confess
07:03
them before God and before the people
07:05
that we have sinned against can’t we get
07:07
freedom secondly we must understand that
07:12
there is no sin too great or too small
07:17
that God cannot forgive and on top of
07:20
that there is no tragedy too great that
07:23
God can turn into triumph if we even
07:25
just look at the cross a major tragedy
07:28
God sacrificed his own son that we may
07:31
have eternal life through faith in Jesus
07:34
it was a great tragedy but God turned
07:36
that into triumph through Christ’s
07:38
resurrection we have the opportunity to
07:41
have eternal life free from pain
07:44
suffering injustice God can turn tragedy
07:47
into triumph and thirdly God calls us to
07:52
stand for injustice no matter what no
07:55
matter who and where and what it is the
07:58
gospel is the Gospel message is one of
08:01
salvation justice and Reconciliation
08:03
isaiah 1 in 17 tells us learn to do good
08:08
seek justice
08:11
correct oppression bring justice to the
08:14
fatherless plea the widow’s calls god
08:17
bless you guys and i’m praying for y’all
