00:01
hey everybody my name is Coley Waataja i
00:03
am the director of women’s ministry at
00:05
antioch community church in northeast
00:06
minneapolis
00:07
and i want to bring you a word of
00:09
encouragement today from the book of
00:10
first peter
00:11
i started to read this book this morning
00:13
and i got stuck
00:15
on the first two verses and so i wanted
00:18
to talk to you about the first two
00:20
so often in these letters in the new
00:21
testament we skip over the introduction
00:24
it’s like the
00:25
envelope of a letter and have you ever
00:27
thrown away an envelope that you
00:29
realized later
00:30
that you actually needed i’ve done that
00:31
multiple times whether it’s wedding
00:33
invites
00:34
where i didn’t know until after i threw
00:36
it away if this was
00:37
just for me or for me and guests or if
00:39
kids were invited or something
00:41
or one time i threw away an envelope
00:44
that
00:44
had contact info on it that i had no
00:47
other way of getting and i
00:48
still have not reached out to that
00:50
person since because i lost the envelope
00:52
so when we overlook these greetings in
00:55
these letters in the new testament we
00:57
can really miss a lot
00:59
so let’s start in first peter chapter
01:01
one i want to read verses one and two
01:05
peter an apostle of jesus christ
01:08
to those who are elect exiles in the
01:10
dispersion
01:12
in pontus galatia cappadocia asia
01:15
and bithynia according to the
01:17
foreknowledge of god
01:18
the father in the sanctification of the
01:20
spirit for obedience to jesus christ and
01:23
forth sprinkling with his blood
01:25
may grace and peace be multiplied to you
01:29
now this could just be really
01:31
superfluous and unnecessary of peter to
01:34
put in all of this stuff before he gets
01:35
into like the meat
01:36
so to speak of his letter but i think
01:39
everything he says here is really
01:40
important
01:41
one way that uh can be really helpful is
01:44
to think about the
01:45
the w’s the who where what why how
01:48
and uh so in this case if we look at
01:51
that you see
01:52
the who is whose writing is peter uh
01:56
to whom is he writing to the elect
01:59
exiles of the dispersion now that also
02:02
tells us a little bit about the where
02:03
the dispersion was an idea uh
02:07
of originally the jewish people being
02:09
spread out all over the world after the
02:10
babylonian exile
02:12
because they never all fully got back to
02:14
jerusalem but here
02:15
peter is using it in an even greater
02:17
sense for jewish and gentile
02:19
non-jewish believers in jesus who are
02:22
spread out throughout the world
02:24
and here he highlights several regions
02:27
that are now kind of in modern-day
02:28
turkey
02:29
but it’s really for believers in the
02:31
entire world
02:33
and he identifies them as elect exiles
02:37
and it is according to the foreknowledge
02:40
of god the father
02:42
in the sanctification of the spirit
02:44
that’s the how the spirit
02:47
does his sanctifying work in us and
02:50
makes us
02:51
more and more into the image of god who
02:53
is our father
02:56
and it’s for something this is the why
02:59
for obedience to jesus christ
03:01
and for sprinkling with his blood which
03:04
is a reference to his crucifixion and
03:05
how his sacrifice
03:07
covers us and then finally he ends with
03:10
the what
03:11
may grace and peace be multiplied to you
03:14
that’s what he wants for us
03:17
and if you look at this just from the
03:20
circumstances
03:22
i think this this desire that peter has
03:25
in chapter
03:25
in verse 2 that grace and peace would be
03:28
multiplied
03:29
that could seem like a really
03:31
frustrating
03:32
desire because if you just look at the
03:34
circumstance and
03:36
a listener may say hey i’m in exile i’m
03:38
not in my home
03:39
i’m not where i’m supposed to be how can
03:41
i possibly
03:43
have grace and peace in this moment
03:46
but i think peter answers that in all of
03:48
the other things he says
03:50
because if he if you don’t just look at
03:51
circumstances but if you look to god
03:55
instead of all of those things you see
03:57
of what you don’t have
03:59
instead you see an all-powerful god who
04:02
is my
04:02
father and you see that his spirit
04:06
is refining and and ridding me of the
04:09
things
04:09
that i don’t need in the first place and
04:11
i get to look more and more like my
04:13
father
04:14
as time goes on as his sanctifying work
04:16
continues
04:18
i also see that he has a purpose and a
04:20
plan for me
04:21
all of this even the dispersion is in
04:23
accordance with the foreknowledge of god
04:26
god knows what he’s doing and he has a
04:27
plan in it
04:29
well if i am covered in all of these
04:32
ways
04:33
and if i’m covered by the sprinkling of
04:35
his blood
04:36
if god has a purpose for me and i get to
04:38
call him father
04:40
how can i not have grace and peace and
04:43
i cannot just have it but i can have it
04:44
in ever increasing measure
04:47
what does he say may grace and peace be
04:50
multiplied to you
04:53
folks the grace and peace that we have
04:56
whatever grace
04:57
we experience whatever peace we feel
05:00
it is not based on our circumstance it’s
05:03
based
05:04
on our identity in who we are it’s based
05:07
on
05:08
the fact that god the father has loved
05:10
us first
05:12
and he is the one who is sanctifying us
05:14
and covering us with the blood of jesus
05:17
and because of that we can have
05:20
immeasurable amounts
05:21
of grace and peace so no matter what
05:24
your circumstances look like today
05:26
the world can be really scary and maybe
05:28
you feel like an exile right now
05:30
even just in circumstantial uh the state
05:32
of your life
05:33
feels like you’re in exile from your
05:35
former life life before all the
05:38
craziness of these days
05:41
i pray that you would not just look at
05:42
circumstances but that you would turn
05:45
and look to god and to see what he has
05:47
to say
05:48
about who you are about what you’re
05:50
called to right now
05:52
and about what he has for you so for you
05:56
and for me may grace and peace be
05:58
multiplied to you
06:00
god bless
